Rowdy is an upcoming action drama film directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film features Mohan Babu, Manchu Vishnu, Shanvi Srivastava and Jayasudha in lead roles. The music of the film is composed by Sai Karthik and here is an iQlik exclusive review of the album:
The album begins with a haunting track Ammorini Minchina sung by the composer Sai Karthik himself. The string section is impactful and the vocals are high on depth. Though it speaks of the heroics of the lead actor, it has a great eeriness associated with it. The way in which it reaches a crescendo with progressive rhythms is commendable.
After some eerie beginnings, it’s time for a great melody Nee Meedha Ottu sung by Karthik and Shwetha Mohan. It is interesting to see the composition based on the most brilliant Carnatic Raaga Keeravani which was adapted perfectly for a romantic duet. The composing style has heavy influence of Modern Ilaiyaraaja numbers. The vocalists do the right justice for this feel good duet.
The feel good atmosphere suddenly transforms to the title track Rowdy Song with galvanizing chorus. It has an irresistible resemblance with the title track of Varma’s earlier venture Raktha Charitra. However, the intensity in which it is presented makes it stand out in the album. The glorification of violence, which is an unmistakable style of Varma’s films is brilliantly reflected in the track.
The album reaches the folksy styled item song Oh Bullemma which has been composed with foot tapping rhythm and decent melody as well. The instruments used are surprisingly yesteryear clarinet. The usage of nostalgic instruments in a modern item song is a new experimentation for sure.
The peculiar feel is back with Mangalyam, a track with emotional depth and speaking of impending danger. The lead singer Srikanth does a great job in striking the emotional chord. Lyrics by Gangotri Vishwanath deserve a special mention.
The powerfully violent album comes to a grand finale stage with Anna’s Theme- an instrumental track with heavy laden instruments and powerful chorus. The string section is made best of use and the undercurrent energy is evident throughout the progress.
Verdict:
Rowdy is an album which is high on energy and emotions. The composer Sai Karthik does a good job in maintaining the intensity of the film through his interesting compositions. However, the album lacks the regular masala styled songs which may not fare well regular film music listeners.
