Comedy films are always challenging to make- irrespective of the language or region. It is called to be the toughest genre to excel because it demands great ease, brilliant timing and excellent characterization. If mythology adds to this already challenging genre, it becomes even more difficult to make it a memorable film. One such film which had the right blend of Comedy and Mythology, with great family values is S.V.Krishna Reddy’s Yamaleela. The film starred comedian Ali in the lead role and that indeed was a challenging task.  This path breaking modern comedy classic completes 20 years by today and still continues to create ripples of laughter among the audience.

Here are some of the highlights from Yamaleela – the modern classic comedy!

-> The story of Yamaleela was made initially to cast Superstar Krishna’s son Mahesh Babu in the lead. When S.V.Krishna Reddy narrated the story, Krishna expressed his view that the story would be hard for teenager like Mahesh Babu to star at that moment but appreciated the script. It was when Ali was considered for the role which made his career turn in an enthralling way.

-> The main highlight of the film is “Thota Ramudu” character played by Tanikella Bharani. Thota Ramudu is an evil local goon who has a weakness to write poems and trouble people around.  The way Tanikella Bharani played the role generated nonstop laughter among the audience. Nobody can forget the “Chelli Pelli” poem which is utterly hilarious.

-> Brahmanandam played the role of Chitragupta- who works as an assistant for Yama – a Hindu Mythological character. His interactions with current day humans- especially a policeman named Ranjith (Kota Srinivasa Rao) redefined the comedy era of the 90s.

-> Ali excelled in the title role having a tinge of comedy as well as sentiment and balancing both these aspects tremendously. This film turned Ali’s career with a new ray of light flocking him with opportunities.

-> Yamaleela is considered to be one of the most successful commercial films in the 90s era.

-> A sequel to Yamaleela is currently being filmed with Ali in the lead and the audiences are anticipating another interesting hilarious ride. This sequel features Mohan Babu in an interesting role making it even more promising. Chitragupta and Ranjith characters are continued in this sequel.
