'Experimentation Redefined!'- Uthama Villain Audio Review

March 31, 2015 - 11:45 AM IST Uttama Villain

Uthama Villain is an upcoming experimental film starring the versatile actor Kamal Hassan, Vishwaroopam fame Pooja Kumar, Parvathy Menon in lead roles. The film also marks the last on screen appearance of veteran director K.Balachander. Kala Tapasvi K.Vishwanath also played a pivotal role in the film. Music for the film is composed by the fresh talent Ghibran and directed by Sathi Leelavathi fame Ramesh Arvind. Here is an iqlik exclusive audio review of the album:

The most anticipated album begins with Lavve Lavva with contemporary sequencing and thumping rhythm section. Kamal himself rendered vocals for the song with his usual husky voice giving it a new fun factor. The overall presentation of the track is totally novel and impressive.

It is time for a contrasting number Kaanuke Bondu Malli taking back the listener to the bygone era.  The wonderful classicism is quite evident in the ambience it creates along with poetic lyrics. Gripping rhythm, relaxing interludes and the breezy nature add to be just an icing on the cake. The vocalist Padmalatha does a commendable job with high and lower octave notes in great ease.

Thadhanatthom: Utthamudi Parichayam is a great representation of folk genre which is like a tribute for the forgotten stage plays culture in the country. Though the tune is a prominent folk one, the representation of it with novel sounding and fresh style is what makes it unique. Kamal Hassan once again does a brilliant job in rendering the track with his unpretentious diction.

The experimentation continues with Srushti Niyamam with an eeriness and philosophical aura in the midst of timely chorus and neat rhythm section. However, the lyrics could have been much more appealing to make a better impact on the listener. The musical grandeur of the track is quite evident in the royal interludes and amazing orchestration with Kathakali styled rhythm.

The album reaches a pinnacle with Naa Rudhirapu Oka Thrunam: Hiranya Samhaaram sung by Kamal again with his power packed vocals and dialogue delivery. The track brilliantly speaks about the mythological story featuring the rakashasa Hiranya who challenges his own son Prahlada in terms of stage drama. The track interestingly goes in a debate style where the question about existence about God occurs repeatedly. Kudos to Ghibran for giving a gripping musical support for one of its kind situation!

Utthama Villain Theme occurs as a masterstroke in the end with the peculiar chants of the title in the midst of eerie string section and progressive rhythm. The track would definitely leave a lasting impact on the listener for the extraordinary ambience it creates.

Verdict:

Ghibran, Kamal Hassan and Ramesh Arvind redefine the term experimentation with this one of its kind album!
