Breaking: Government issues new censor guidelines for OTT

February 25, 2021 - 06:17 PM IST

As many people are complaining about various contents on the OTT platforms, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has decided to regulate the shows and movies of the digital platforms. The government has now asked the OTT platforms to self classify their content into five age-based sections. The categories include U (Universal), A (Adult), U/A (7+ age), U/A (13+ age) and U/A (18+) age. The digital platforms need to segregate their content based on these categories.

They should also have a parental lock system in order to restrict children from watching content that is not suitable for their age. The OTT platforms will also have a three-tier grievance redressal mechanism. Recently, we have seen shows like Paatal Lok and Tandav receiving a backlash from a few sections of the audiences for portraying offensive content. To avoid such circumstances in the future, the government has taken this step.

From now on, all the OTT content will be categorized under these sections.
