Allu Arjun's Pushpa 2: The Rule became a blockbuster, earning more than Rs. 1700 crore at the box office and remaining one of the biggest hits in the history of Indian cinema. Just a few days ago, it also successfully completed 50 days of its theatrical run.
Coincidentally, on the same day Pushpa completed its 50 days, one of the historic films in Hindi cinema, Deewaar also completed 50 years of its release. Starring Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role, Deewaar is one of the iconic films in Bollywood which paved the path for a new kind of storytelling where the hero comes from a working class, has a macho attitude and defies the law but does good for people around him.
Many Amitabh films in the 80s followed the same template. However, Bollywood moved away from that template and focused on urban-based romantic dramas, which eventually distanced it from rural North India.
However, films like Pushpa and KGF brought audiences back to theatres and made them celebrate those films. Pushpa is now just not a film but a brand in North India. Deewar was the same 50 years ago. It has to be seen if Bollywood realises its mistakes and adapts the Deewar formula moving forward.
