The relationship of Brother- Sister holds of prime and unique importance in our Indian Households. They share a very special bond right from childhood and it goes on till the last breath. Despite different paths of life, the special bonding between brother and sister is always one of the most amazing relationships one can think of. Even without communicating verbally or asking for help, the brother- sister duo are always there for each other like a mutual support and strength throughout their respective lives. Our Telugu Cinema has been of no exception to fall under the influence of this amazing bonding. There are many films which came in Tollywood, exploring the sentimental angle between Brother- Sister but one greatest film of all time- Dr.Chakravarthy explores this relationship with a different edge and sensitive expressions. On the eve of Rakhi Pournami, iQlikmovies.com takes the readers back to the wonderful era of Dr.Chakravarthy- a legendary film which reminded the Telugu Audience about the eternity of Brother- Sister bonding.
Coming to the storyline of the film, Dr.Chakravarthy (ANR) arrives from abroad and plans to marry his lady love Dr.Sridevi (Krishnakumari). He has an affectionate sister Sudha (Geethanjali). Chakravarthy is extremely fond of his sister. Sudha is a great musician and loves writing poetry and she gets married to a loving person. However, by the time Chakravarthy returns to his hometown, his sister is terribly ill and in last stages of her life. Chakravarthy gets distraught to know that his sister has cancer. Sudha requests Chakravarthy to marry her sister in law Nirmala (Shaavukaru Janaki ) as a dying wish. Chakravarthy doesn’t get a chance to tell that he has already loved a woman in life. He suppresses the sadness and marries Nirmala as per his sister’s wish. Nirmala is a materialistic person who loves going around for picnics, shopping and doesn’t understand the artistic subtleties in life. Chakravarthy is a busy doctor with nonstop work dealing with patients, treatment and tests. He has nothing in common with Nirmala and their life goes on in a mechanical way, despite staying under one roof. The story makes a turn when Chakravarthy meets Ravindra (Jaggiah) and his wife Madhavi (Savitri). Madhavi is a great veena player and writes poetry exactly like Chakravarthy’s lost sister Sudha. Chakravathy starts feeling that his sister has returned in the form of Madhavi. He feels relief in visiting their house and speaking to Madhavi so that it’s like speaking to his own sister. Though Madhavi finds Chakravarthy’s behavior little odd in the beginning, her husband convinces her saying Chakravarthy is a very good gentleman.
Meanwhile, Nirmala despises the affection of Chakravarthy towards Madhavi’s family. On the ill advice of the cook (Suryakantham), Nirmala writes a secret letter to Ravindra by wrongly quoting the friendship of Chakravarthy and Madhavi. Ravindra starts believing the cooked up story and hates Chakravarthy. He insults Madhavi without even considering that the latter is pregnant and in weakened condition. As the story reaches climax, Ravindra realizes that Chakravarthy only had sisterly affection but nothing else on Madhavi. Nirmala realizes her mistake of writing such wrong letter. Ravindra realizes his blunder and even names his new born son after Chakravarthy.
The entire storyline moves around one suspense element that Chakravarthy has only sisterly affection towards Madhavi. This could have been progressed without revealing to either the audience or the characters. The screenplay could have been in such a way that Chakravarthy and Madhavi could have been in a different relationship and the suspense is revealed in climax. But such cheap idea wouldn’t have come for a legendary director like Adurthi Subba Rao and ace producer like Dukkapati Madhusudana Rao. The critics praise this film for being straightforward without any nonsense elements throughout its progress . Director Adurthi Subba Rao did great work in establishing the deep emotional layers of the hero, and star cast along with emotional conflicts.
Though there were many films like Rakta Sambandham starring Sr.NTR till Hitler starring Chiranjeevi or Tholi Prema starring Pawan Kalyan featured the sister sentiment angle, Dr.Chakravarthy remains tall in the midst of many thought provoking sister sentiment films in Tollywood. On this day of Rakhi Pournami, iQlikmovies.com wishes all the brothers and sisters of Telugu Household an eventful day and a great affectionate year ahead!
